Starting my Recreation Journey
Did I expect myself to fall in love with recreation in the geriatric field? No.
Do I plan to be here long term? Possibly. Forever? No.
Do I recommend it? 110% yes.
What is recreation in geriatrics? Recreation is so many things in this field, though it isn’t always recognized as important. Recreation is the department tasked with the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual stimulation for seniors in different settings. I personally have worked in a handful of settings such as retirement, assisted living, day program, and long term care. All require creativity, adaptability, and an awareness to older people.
Recreation staff can be the first and last people one may see in a day, or the ones seen most frequently. We are confided in, welcomed, and go through a lot with the residents who we work with. The professional relationships made are ones that become part of your work family. Ever lasting connections and memories that you’ll carry with you throughout your career and life.
As a recreation department manager (my current position) we do a little more. Facilitation is still very much a present role, but you are also tasked with the planning and development of activities, outings, events, assessments, and the administrative portion for your department and team.
It is not all fun and games, but a role and department that makes a daily difference for residents and their families. We provide a stimulating experience that increases the quality of life and preserves the wellbeing of our residents.
Age care is a field where people are always needed, but a career path that is not always easy. Working with those later in life you must come into the reality that people you build daily routine and rapport with do pass, decline, or come into barriers. Protecting your own mental and emotional health is a challenge many come into within this field but must be prioritized before you burn out.
Do I have any regrets going into age care? absolutely not. I am so grateful to be where I am and how far I have come in this area.
Do I recommend it? To everyone I can. This is a rewarding, supportive, and educational field that is forever growing. If you have compassion, positive outlook, and a non-judgemental frame of mind and are someone who enjoys bringing enjoyment to others as well as helping others than this may be a great opportunity for you.
